The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos frequently feature them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such boundless exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to make music."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Milestone

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album was born from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words track breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent resilience required a new sound – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

However the sister act will consistently be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
