No Fewer Than 6 Lose Their Lives in Crowd Crush at Ghanaian Armed Forces Enlistment Event

No fewer than 6 individuals have lost their lives amid a crowd crush at a military recruitment gathering held in a stadium in the West African nation.

The Wednesday's "devastating" event appeared to have been caused by "an unexpected surge of applicants who overcame security measures and stormed the gates," stated a statement from Ghana's armed forces.

Twenty-two additional individuals were injured, including 5 who are in serious state.

Thousands had gathered at the El-Wak sports venue, in the main city, the capital, with the aspiration of joining the armed forces.

The country has a rate of joblessness among young people of approximately 32%, the most recent official data indicate, and such enlistment drives typically attract large crowds and frequently result in chaotic scenes.

The closing date to apply for this recruitment was extended by a seven days to accommodate additional candidates, as a number had faced challenges in the process.

Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the crush occurred before the planned commencement time of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.

The nation's leader John Mahama has gone to see the injured in medical care.

Order has been restored, and the recruitment exercise has since started.
