A Prediction Market User Made $Nearly Half a Million from Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.

A trader profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the month's conclusion surged in the hours before Donald Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been apprehended.

A single trader, which became a member recently and took four positions, all on Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

But the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and surged in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," said an industry expert.

A small number of other traders also made significant sums from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule presented on Monday would prevent federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the United States, with users able to predict everything from sports to politics.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting space.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
